Entering its fifth year since its founding in 2019, Daniel Crump & Margriet Vandezande- Crump’s converted coaching inn continues to dazzle with its all-round excellence (and was sensibly rewarded by the AA as their 2024/5 ‘Restaurant of the Year’). It’s not a gastropub, but “an outstanding fine-dining restaurant”, where you can eat à la carte or there’s a tasting menu for £95 per person. “You notice the service from the second you arrive. It isn’t a surprise to find the same staff there, year on year, as they have careers and are developed as professionals. The food is always of the highest quality with a very accomplished kitchen” led by head chef George Sweeney. A very large proportion of locals said it delivered their best meal of the year and it is now one of the top-100 most commented-on destinations outside London in our annual diners’ poll.

Four years down the line, Daniel Crump and Margriet Vandezande-Crump’s “gorgeous” converted seventeenth-century coaching inn is simply “perfection” to the very many diners who comment on it: “not only do you experience fine dining” (an “innovative menu” whose “consistency is something to behold”), “but you get the choice of great beers too, because it’s a pub!” On the food front, “excellent” tasting menus (including dedicated vegetarian and vegan options) are ably abetted by a “brilliant-value set lunch”. Add in “incredible” service and “what more could you want?”

“Beautiful building… beautiful food… beautiful people” – Daniel Crump and Margriet Vandezande-Crump have transformed this old pub (since they took it over in 2019) to create a “wonderful” destination in this chichi town, once devoid of much in the way of culinary interest. They are not only “amazing hosts” (“and have put together a fantastic team”) but also “constantly innovating as well as working actively in the local community”. “The menu changes rapidly to reflect the best seasonal ingredients at any time of year” and the “strong standard of cooking” adds to a “wonderful” offering all-round.

“An extremely welcome ‘finer’ dining experience in the Old Town” – this “fun and luxurious” eighteenth-century pub was refurbished in 2019 by Daniel Crump and Margriet Vandezande-Crump and has won an enthusiastic local fan club. “They are perfect hosts” – “there’s always a warm welcome with a magic touch from the front of house team that makes each visit feel special”. “Interesting dishes are well executed and change often enough to keep things fresh, plus there are always generous ‘extras’ (amuse bouche, yummy bread and butters, etc… don't miss out on trying the delicious nibbles, even if it means rolling home!)”. Even a reporter who thought the food “overpriced and with small portions” judged it overall as “very good indeed”.

Grace Dent “foxtrotted neatly and nimbly around the world of fine dining” at a “decidedly fancy” restaurant in a “charming and quaint” former coaching inn in a “heroically lovely market town” – all of which left her pining for something a little more down-to-earth – and tasty.

“There’s some clever, cogent cooking going on at the Greyhound, with some hits, some misses, but an overall sense that, in a bid to be the best restaurant for miles around, they might just be missing the chance to be simply delicious.” 

Dessert showed her what the kitchen was capable of when “a mood of pure decadence was allowed to let rip and flourish… we had îles flottantes with limoncello custard and raspberry souffle with sarsaparilla sorbet”.
