This half-timbered fifteenth-century former coaching inn is a “reliable venue for good food”, with a menu that ticks boxes all the way from basic cheeseburger or beer-battered hake ’n’ chips to more original offerings such as goat cheese doughnut with beetroot sugar and a flexible selection of dishes available in two sizes – as either starters or mains. Top Tip – “the great lobster Caesar salad”.

For 34 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).

"Return after a six and a half years. Food was good last time, even better this visit. Still not the longest menu, but more than enough choice. Whilst I had a very unusually presented beef tartare in small round pieces, it was beautifully presented with leaves and a delicious dressing. My partner has a plate of very good and warm sourdough (I helped her with it). I had the lamb and my partner had the beef, the meat was perfectly cooked and was clearly of superior quality. The accompaniments were delicious too. I had, as the dessert a quite stunning pumpkin and chocolate Mille feuille. Hard to say which was my favourite course, only disappointment, the English garden mocktail was astonishingly sweet, unlike the garden (expecting it to be herby) and was £14, a bit costly! Apart from some minor tweaks needed with customer service, astonished it hasn’t got a bib gourmand, and must be very close to one Michelin star."
