Jan Ostle & Mary Wilson have established their “truly exceptional” if apparently modest Redland outfit as “one of Bristol’s best” in the past nine years, offering “superb clarity of tastes and textures throughout a perfectly judged no-choice menu in a laid-back setting”. Much of the produce is home-grown on their two-acre plot, then transformed by “fine, imaginative and superbly executed cooking”. It is also “a relative bargain”.

“A combination of casual style and fine dining” – Jan Ostle & Mary Wilson’s modern bistro in Redland is “well worth seeking out” for the “always excellent, ethically unquestionable” cooking (much of it using home-grown produce) that they’re “always pushing to improve”. “The food is most definitely refined but the venue, a small Victorian shop in a shabby-chic part of Bristol, is relaxed and the vibe is more cafe than restaurant”. “At lunchtime, you can opt for a cut-down tasting menu which is great value at this level”.

“Unpretentious, daring, and exceptional value” – Jan Ostle & Mary WiIson’s “accomplished” Redland bistro is widely acclaimed for its “fresh and interesting” take on “fabulous, locally sourced food”, most of which they grow on their own smallholding. “You could be forgiven for missing this small establishment in a residential street – we did! Tables are very close together, but this all adds to the atmosphere – it’s not a restaurant you’d expect to be tasting menu only”.

“Unbelievable value for the most sensational food produced in a minuscule kitchen”, agree fans of Jan Ostle & Mary Wilson’s hyper-local Redland bistro. “Three cheers for this welcoming local”, with “very friendly, efficient, knowledgeable service in simple surroundings”. The kitchen relies on “home-grown veg and local suppliers to produce the most brilliant mixture of innovative dishes, textures and tastes, all presented on interesting china and put together in a relaxed but oh-so-professional manner”.

"Superbly crafted dishes with a well selected accompanying wine 'flight'. Attentive waiting staff who are only too keen to help. Decor is very modern, but fits well with the restaurants offering. A gem."

Charlotte Ivers sang the praises of a restaurant that is “little more than a tiny, bare-floored, white-walled room”, dominated by a blackboard with the day’s set menu.

“That changes frequently, because most of it was grown by the team ‘at our little farm out by the airport’, says our waiter.” There are no tablecloths or pretensions here, but crucially, the food is good.
