Owner's description

The pub is built on the summit of Edgehill, some 700ft above sea level, overlooking the plain below which served as the backdrop for the first major battle of The English Civil War. The conflict occurred on Sunday the 23rd of October 1642 between Oliver Cromwell’s parliamentary troops led by the Earl of Essex and King Charles Royalists, led by Prince Rupert and Lord Wilmot.

The two armies of approximately equal size; about 12,000 men, fought from early afternoon until nightfall, with neither side gaining a decisive victory.

Whether you wish to dine for a special occasion with family, perhaps a romantic meal watching the sun go down, or a bite to eat whilst walking the centenary or Macmillan way that passes the pub, we are sure to cater for all your requirements with a warm and friendly welcome from our team.

A dearth of feedback this year on this eye-catching landmark, which looks like a fairytale castle and occupies a striking position, with marvellous views over the countryside (and, for history anoraks, sits near a famous battleground from the English Civil War). Expect decent gastropub fare and a particularly cosy bar.

For 34 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).
