“Really wholesome and imaginative food with no fuss and frills” has won a solid reputation over the past 10 years for Jonathon MacDonald’s modern European small-plates specialist in Kelvingrove. It shut up shop for six months last autumn to allow for major renovation works while the team switched its attention to opening a new sister venue, Margo, in the city centre.

“Tasty tapas-style food” to share at “very reasonable prices”, plus “laid-back and friendly service” draw a “great crowd” to Jonathan MacDonald’s “vibrant and funky venue” in Kelvingrove. Top Tip – “try ordering 2 or 3 dishes at a time, as they are brought out as soon as they are ready and arrive in a random order”.

“Gutsy flavours” from an “eclectic, ever-changing and high-quality” menu of “varied and creative” dishes “never fail to impress” at Jonathan MacDonald’s Kelvingrove gastropub, which regularly hits the heights. Its chilled and lively atmosphere is “brilliant” too.

“Innovative food that’s well priced” from a menu of sparky small plates helps ensure Jonathan MacDonald’s Finnieston gastropub is “always packed”. There’s lots to interest non- meat-eaters here too, with their own dedicated menu to select from.

The Times

Chitra Ramaswamy revisited Finnieston’s “ur-example” of the casual restaurant – the sort of place that is “universally loved” and sets the trends others follow. Ox and Finch opened 10 years ago as the debut from the Scoff group (which now has Ka Pao, Margo and Sebb’s to its name), and has reopened after a six-month refurb with a “talented” head chef in Craig Nelson (returning to the kitchen after a stint at The Ledbury in London), and “a brand-new, smoking hot, soon to be replicated up and down the country, menu”. 

Its best plate is cod on wild garlic salsa verde “with hen of the wood mushrooms that have been compressed and dressed in some sort of umami vinegary sorcery to make them taste like the mushroomiest mushroom of your life… I can’t stop thinking about this dish. I’m obsessed.”

“What a perfect restaurant,” Chitra concluded. “What a comeback. Bring on the next ten years.”
