Harden's survey result
Summary
Even critics of the “eyewatering prices”, say “you can’t help but admire how well this take on a country pub in ‘Bamfordshire’ is done” and most diners at Lady Bamford’s super-scenic Cotswolds Inn “love the experience, saying it’s so laid back and with great food”. In June 2025 – too late for feedback in our annual diners’ poll – the kitchen welcomed Callum Graham as Executive Chef, who joined from the much accoladed Bohemia in Jersey, and with a view to ‘helping elevate our culinary experiences across the business’ with the aim to ‘champion excellence in sustainable, seasonal dining across its portfolio’.
Summary
“Much more restaurant than pub, and with a car park full of Chelsea tractors”, Lady Bamford’s “picture-postcard” 18th-century inn “does rather seem like an extension of West London” (and “with prices to match”). It’s not just “very easy on the eye”, according to most diners, however. As often there is the odd cynic for whom the overall experience is “very average”, but by most accounts chef Sam Bowser (whose CV includes Le Manoir aux Quat’Saisons) oversees “very good” food with original touches, that makes this “a real find hidden away in the Cotswolds”.
Summary
This fancy Cotswold gastropub is popular with the Chipping Norton set, being owned by Lady Bamford, the driving force of Daylesford Organic (who supply much of the produce). Chef Sam Bowser’s food elicited very solid marks this year, despite the occasional critic who feels it’s “overpriced, even for those of us used to London mark-ups”. Best way to do it? “Go for a country walk before or after and grab a room for the night”.
Summary
The “great food and amazing service” are everything you would expect at this deluxe Cotswolds gastropub handy for the Chipping Norton set and owned by Lady Bamford, chatelaine of Daylesford Organic (which supplies much of the produce) and hostess of BoJo’s post-prime ministerial wedding bash. It all comes, of course, “at a fairly significant price”. Sam Bowser, the latest chef to head the kitchen, did a stint as the Bamfords’ private chef a few years back.
For 34 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).
