Harden's says

Open since 1976, and still owned by the same family, Bobby's had a major refurbishment in the summer of 2018, re-opening with a new look and some new dishes (all still vegetarian, of course!)

“Not your usual Indian”, down to the bright, café-style décor – this “totally authentic” icon on the Golden Mile was founded in the 1970s, and is still run by the Lakhani family; it’s built a huge reputation over the years for its “vegetarian, mostly Gujarati-style, home cooking” – and, surprisingly, its afternoon tea, acclaimed by TV chef Rick Stein, and offering unlimited sweet and savoury snacks washed down with masala chai. Top Tip – “try as many new dishes as possible – they won’t disappoint!”

“Ordered too much and enjoyed it all” sums up the appeal of this Gujarati vegetarian, a Leicester institution with “lovely staff”, that opened on the city‘s ‘Golden Mile’ in 1976 and is now run by Dharmesh, son of the late founder Bhagwanjibhai Lakhani and his wife Manglaben. Top Menu Tip – book ahead for the £25 bottomless afternoon tea, hailed by Rick Stein on his BBC Food Stories show last year as an ‘Indian version of tea at The Ritz’.

“Incredible Indian street food” has been enjoyed at this Gujarati vegetarian fixture on Leicester’s ‘Golden Mile’ since 1976, when it was opened by the late Bhagwanjibhai and Manglaben Lakhani. Now run by their son Dharmesh, it has been refurbished taking inspiration from the classic Bollywood film ‘Bobby’, the source of its name.

This “longstanding vegetarian” was one of the first Gujarati canteens on Leicester’s ‘Golden Mile’, founded by the late couple Bhagwanjibhai and Manglaben Lakhani in 1976 and named after a hit Bollywood film of the era (and is still family-run). It’s always been a bit of an uneven performer, regularly inspiring dud reports, but equally consistently pleasing fans who feel “it always delivers great-tasting food”.

For 34 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).
