A former courthouse with exposed beams plays host to this rustic and tiny European restaurant run by chef Nathan Marshall and FOH wife Evi, a “lovely lady” whose Hungarian roots sometimes inspire the fine-dining on the menu. On limited feedback this year, there were reports of some “delicious” dishes and as we went to press, demand for a table was so high that they were already fully booked for 2024! Top Tip – to circumvent the need to book way ahead, keep an eye on their Instagram account (@n.marshall_chef), where they sometimes advertise last-minute cancellations.

A “great little spot” in what was once a courthouse – though it’s not necessarily evident from the façade or the rustic interior either; the “husband-and-wife team (Nathan and Evi Marshall) work well together”, and the modern European food “continues to improve”, making it “a welcome addition to an area surprisingly thin on exceptional restaurants”.

“A husband and wife team run this small restaurant and run it well, with exceptional food and charming front of house service”. Reports are few, but that’s the low-down on this converted rural courthouse, now run by Nathan and Evi Marshall. The cuisine steers a line between being complex yet down-to-earth: for example your banoffee pie pudding is here presented as a soufflé!

For 35 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).

"If there is a better restaurant in the UK I don't know it. However, the bad news is that they are leaving the current location near Liss in Hampshire in August 2026 so watch this space. Unless they change the overall capacity - unlikely - you still have to book aeons ahead."
