There is so much right about the Art Deco dining room of this famous hotel, which reopened in late 2023 once again as an in-house operation (not under a celeb chef as it had been for the previous two decades): “service is never cringingly servile but smooth, warm and friendly” and the atmosphere provides “opulence but also relaxation”. But while some do also acclaim its “superb” luxe-brasserie cooking (fruits de mer platters, steak au poivre, Dover sole, Scottish lobster) too many meals here are reported as being merely “adequate”, so precluding a better rating: “a delightful place to be, service is professional, but we’ve found the food surprisingly poor given the status of the hotel and the cost of a meal”.

It’s a total case of ‘Back to the Future’ in this Art Deco dining room. After a string of collabs with the likes of Gordon Ramsay, Simon Rogan and Daniel Humm, it reopened in late 2023 much as it was 20 years previously, before all the celeb nonsense set in. Some bemoan this lack of stardust, but it’s hard not to find positives in the “delightful room” and “proper service”. That the conventional, posh brasserie cuisine is no longer ‘pushing the envelope’ similarly makes it “boring and bland” to the excitement-seekers, but on balance the rating for food here is “better-than-average” and we’re with those who say “the new format is an improvement on what it was before”: if you’re a very posh hotel dining room in Mayfair, don’t fight it! Top Tip – “the set lunch is very good and fairly priced for such a special location”, as is the pre-theatre deal.

After 20 years of mucking about with megastar chefs, like Gordon Ramsay, Simon Rogan and Daniel Humm – this landmark Mayfair hotel’s glorious Art Deco dining room is finally going back to sailing under its ‘own brand’ flag: returning to an updated version of the format it abandoned two decades ago. Coalin Finn is to be at the stoves, and the food will be a bit fancier than when the space was something of an undiscovered traditional gem. Few five stars in the late ’90s were serving barbequed radish skewers braised in homemade teriyaki, laced with horseradish; but grilled native lobster with crushed Jersey royals and sauce Américaine… that sounds more like it.
