Owner Alexandra Petit-Mentzelopoulos is a scion of the family who own Bordeaux’s epic Château Margaux, which explains the unusually heavyweight wine list at this attractive and comfortably converted Tudorbethan pub in Marylebone. Over 50 vintages, including 14 Château Margaux wines, are available by the glass (using the Coravin system) from a list whose emphasis is on clarets and top Burgundian names. Its modern European cuisine has Francophile leanings and – though not the main event compared to the wine – plays a respectable supporting role.

“The wine list is pricey, even by Marylebone High Street standards” at this Tudorbethan pub, with leaded windows and inset stained glass. That’s to be expected, as it’s backed by Alexandra Petit-Mentzelopoulos – part of the family who own the legendary Château Margaux – and you really have to be a lover of wine (some famous names are available by the glass using the Coravin system) to get the most out of the place, which has extensive listings – amongst other areas – of bottlings from Bordeaux and Burgundy: for example, there is a ‘Château Margaux Experience’: a ‘degustation’ of 50ml glass of 4 vintages for £95. Viewed purely as a place to get fed? “We liked it, the food is lovely, but there are options offering better value”.

Converted from a Tudorbethan pub in Marylebone (complete with black and white exterior and leaded-glass windows), this three-floor wine bar and restaurant is part-owned by a scion of the French dynasty behind Château Margaux, explaining the extensive list of vintages from the estate on the French-centric list, many available by the glass. The better-than-incidental French/Italian cooking is also well-rated.

“A fabulous wine list” is the highlight one would hope for at this Marylebone venture – a pub converted by part of the family which owns Château Margaux. Fifty wines are served by the glass and there’s an extensive list of directly sourced Château Margaux wines. Feedback says the food – a mixture of French and Mediterranean dishes – is “wonderful”, too.

For 34 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).
