Acclaimed Hong Kong filmmaker Wong Kar-Wai is to direct a transformation of Yauatcha Soho, which closes this Saturday (26 September) for an overhaul that is expected to take a year.
Kar-Wai is an auteur of uniquely vivid, visually striking films including his masterpiece, In the Mood for Love (2000), one of the most famous Asian movies ever made.
Yauatcha was founded in 2004 by restaurateur Alan Yau, the creator of Hakkasan, and wins consistently high ratings in the Harden’s guide for “exceptional” Cantonese-inspired dishes including its famous venison puffs – although this year’s guide awarded it a lowly 2/5 for ambience.
Kar-Wai says of his new role as creative consultant: “A great film starts with a great story, and so does a great restaurant. It is my great pleasure to take part in this new chapter for Yauatcha Soho’s distinguished story.”
The restaurant has also recruited chef Fan Choi (formerly of Mora and Aulis in Hong Kong) as Research and Development Chef, and he will be introducing a more seasonal menu.
Yauatcha’s City branch will remain open for business as usual.
